Use Your Dental Insurance Before December 31: A Richardson Dentist's Year-End Guide

Most dental plans reset on January 1, and unused benefits simply disappear. Here is how Richardson families can turn the last weeks of the year into a cleaning, a checkup or finished treatment — often for little out of pocket.

01 ·The short answer

Why the end of the year matters for your dental plan

Many dental PPO plans run on the calendar year. Your annual maximum, your deductible and your two covered cleanings reset on January 1, and anything you didn't use is gone. Booking a visit with a dentist in Richardson before December 31 lets you use benefits you have already paid for in premiums.

Every month, you or your employer pays premiums for dental coverage. In return, your plan sets aside an annual maximum — commonly somewhere between $1,000 and $2,000 for PPO plans — to spend on your care. If you only had one cleaning this year, or put off a crown your dentist recommended, a large part of that money will go unused.

The last two months of the year are also when Richardson schedules fill up fastest. Students home from UT Dallas, families on holiday break and patients who just remembered their benefits all want the same appointments. If you are searching for a "dentist near me" in Richardson, Plano or Garland to use your benefits, it pays to book in early November rather than the week before Christmas.

03 ·Benefits you may be leaving behind

Five things to use before December 31

  • Your second cleaning and exam. Most PPO plans cover two dental cleanings a year. If you only came in once, your second visit is likely fully or mostly covered.
  • Treatment you've been putting off. If you met your deductible this year, a filling, dental crown or root canal may cost less now than in January, when the deductible starts over.
  • Your remaining annual maximum. Large treatment plans can be split across two benefit years — part in December, part in January — so you use two annual maximums instead of one.
  • Flexible spending account (FSA) dollars. Dental care is a qualified expense, so FSA funds that would otherwise expire can cover copays and treatment.
  • Your kids' checkups. Children's cleanings, fluoride and dental sealants are often covered well, and winter break makes scheduling easier around Richardson ISD school days.

How to make the most of your benefits in four steps

You don't need to read your whole benefits booklet. Here is the simple version we walk patients through:

  1. 1

Find your plan year. Your insurance card, member portal or HR department can confirm when your benefits renew. Most renew on January 1.

  2. 2

Check what is left. Log in to your insurer's portal, or call our office — we can verify your eligibility and remaining benefits before your visit.

  3. 3

Book before the rush. Appointments in December go quickly. Call (469) 947-3963 or book online to claim a time that works for you.

  4. 4

Plan treatment across years if needed. If you need more care than your remaining maximum covers, we can phase treatment so part falls in this plan year and part in the next.

05 ·Your options

What if you don't have dental insurance?

Not everyone has dental benefits through work. Our in-office membership plan is designed for Richardson patients without insurance: it starts the day you join, includes preventive care for 12 months and adds savings on other treatment. There are no deductibles, waiting periods or claim forms.

If you have an HSA, those funds roll over from year to year, so there is no deadline pressure — but they are still a tax-advantaged way to pay for cleanings, fillings and crowns whenever you need them.

06 ·Why patients choose us

A Richardson dentist that makes insurance simple

Gentle Touch Dentistry has served Richardson, Plano and Garland since 2016 from our office at 1750 Alma Rd. We are in-network with many PPO plans, including Aetna, Cigna, Delta Dental, MetLife, United Healthcare and Guardian. Our team checks your benefits, files your claims and explains your estimate before any treatment begins.

Many treatments can be finished efficiently, too. Same-day CEREC crowns mean a crown can often be completed in a single visit, which helps when you are racing the calendar. Nitrous oxide and oral sedation are available if dental visits make you anxious.

07 ·FAQ

Year-end dental insurance FAQs

Do unused dental benefits roll over to next year?

In most cases, no. Most dental plans reset your annual maximum and deductible at the start of each plan year, and unused benefits do not carry over. A few plans offer limited rollover features, so check your plan details or ask our team to verify.

Can I use my FSA at the dentist in Richardson?

Yes. Dental care such as cleanings, fillings, crowns and root canals is generally a qualified FSA expense. Because FSA funds usually expire at the end of the plan year, December is a good time to use them for treatment you need.

Is it too late to book a dental appointment in December?

It is not too late, but December fills quickly. Calling in November gives you the best choice of times. If you are already in December, call (469) 947-3963 and we will do our best to fit you in before your benefits reset.

Which dental insurance plans do you accept?

We are in-network with more than 29 PPO carriers, including Aetna, Cigna, Delta Dental, MetLife, United Healthcare, Guardian and Humana. See the full list on our insurance page, or call and we will check your specific plan.
